C F S D Governing Board Meeting

 Superintendent Mary Kamerzell shared the following
teachers’ achievements.

Orange Grove Middle School
Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
Chelsea McIntyre, OG mathematics teacher, has been named an Arizona State Finalist for the 2014 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics
and Science Teaching
. The announcement of the National Presidential Award for each state is in the spring or summer of 2015.



Manzanita Elementary School
littleBits Electronics’ “Summer of STEAM”
Tina Moricz, MZ 4 grade teacher, won the littleBits Electronics’ “Summer of STEAM” contest, describing her dream maker experience, and was
awarded a $3,000 pro library of electronic hardware. Her dream maker experience was last year creating a weekly STEM (science, technology,
engineering, math) project time with her students whereby they learned to think critically to solve problems, work as a team, analyze data, and
communicate results using the Engineering Design Process. Tina’s dream is to expand these learning opportunities across the school.

Approval of Resolution in Support of Legendary Teacher
Superintendent Mary Kamerzell reviewed the proposed Resolution in Support of Legendary Teacher Day, September 25, 2014. It is a day to encourage
community members to contact their own Legendary Teacher and let them know how they made a difference in their lives. The governing board approved
the resolution as presented.

Proposed Revision to Policy JICI Weapons in Schools (first reading)
Assistant Superintendent Denise Bartlett presented the first reading of the weapons in schools policy. A change in language will make it clearer that this policy applies to students.

Proposed Revision to Policy KFA Public Conduct on School Property (first reading)
Dr. Bartlett presented the first reading of the public conduct on school property policy. She has recommended the addition of general language to provide the district with the option of taking action against individuals who violate this policy up to and including exclusion from district property

Proposed Revisions to Policy KI Visitors to Schools (first reading)
Dr. Bartlett presented the first reading of the visitors to schools policy. The proposed language addition includes, “No person, other than one who is a peace maker or one who has obtained specific authorization from the appropriate school administrator, shall carry or possess a weapon on school grounds.”

Arizona School Boards Association (ASBA) Law Conference Report
Board members John Bergan, Eileen Jackson, and Mary Lou Richerson reviewed information from the recent ASBA Law Conference that they attended.

Governing Board Member Eileen Jackson shared information from the ASBA Delegate Assembly where she represented the CFSD Governing Board

Consent Agenda Items
The governing board approved the following consent agenda items.
  • August 26, 2014, regular governing board meeting minutes
  • Expense voucher memorandum
  • Personnel memorandum
  • Gift and Donations memorandum
Upcoming Board Meeting
The next regularly scheduled governing board meeting is Tuesday September 23, 2014, 6:30 p.m., Catalina Foothills High School, Building 4, Room 712.

  • Recognition of Super Volunteer
  • Approval of Revision to Policy JICI (second reading)
