Principal's Post

Happy Friday Manzanita Families!

Manzanita has been a whirlwind of activity from day one! Students have been busy becoming acclimated to their classroom communities, learning procedures, and routines as well as establishing classroom expectations with their teachers.  Equally important, they are making new friends and re-connecting with old ones.

Teachers have been very busy determining what students know and their incoming instructional level by administering a variety of academic assessments. These assessments will be used to determine how to best meet your child's needs in the areas of reading, writing and math.  In addition, some families have chosen for their child to participate in CogAT testing to determine eligibility for IDS (Interdisciplinary Studies) at 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.  Another opportunity for CogAT testing will be offered again in January.  For further information regarding CFSD gifted services, please go to the CFSD website, cfsd16.org, and click on Academic Programs, Student Support Services.

Back-to-school evenings are in full swing.  Just a reminder that second grade will be Tuesday, August 26th at 6pm and Mulit-Age/1st will be on Wednesday, August, 27th at 6pm.  You should have received notice from your child's teacher on where you will be meeting or you will find it posted on your teacher's website.

This past Friday, our FFO hosted an informative and enjoyable "New Parent Coffee" where parents had the opportunity to learn about the FFO and many of the wonderful programs and enrichment activities that this very dedicated group of parents supports.  Please go to our FFO page found on our Manzanita website.

The weather has been quite hot as of late.  We can appreciate that students want to be comfortable, but we must remind all parents that students need to adhere to our dress code policy which is posted below.

Student Dress Code
The purpose of the Manzanita dress code is to protect the health and safety of children.  Because physical activity is encouraged every day, appropriate clothes and shoes should be worn every day.  Learning is an active process at Manzanita School; clothing may on occasion become soiled from outdoor play, art or science activities.  Most student attire is acceptable, within the following guidelines: •Clothes should not be excessively tight or short. •Pants should not be excessively long or baggy. •Rubber-soled shoes, either strapped sandals or closed-toe style should be worn at all times.  Sandals and shoes with high wedge soles are not safe.  Flip-flops and tennis shoes with wheels in the soles, “Wheelies”, are not allowed. •Hats are encouraged to protect from the sun, but are not to be worn indoors. •No suggestive, disrespectful or violent words or pictures are allowed on clothes or hats. •The torso is to be covered and no undergarments should be visible.  No hip huggers. •”Short” shorts or short mini skirts are not allowed.  The length of these items should be at least mid-thigh. •Tops must have straps that are the width of 3 fingers--NO spaghetti straps. The staff will determine if the attire is appropriate.  If inappropriate attire is worn, the problem will be solved by asking the student to remove the item or turn the clothing inside out for the remainder of the day.  If those options are not possible, or if the child wears the inappropriate attire a second time, the parent of guardian will be called to pick up the child: the student will not be allowed to return to class until the situation has been remedied. We rely on parental discretion and good judgment to guide students in making appropriate clothing choices for school.

We look forward to meeting all of our new families at our BTS nights and seeing all of those familiar faces in the hallways.

Happy School Year 2014-2015!
